Zekee Rayford being abused and tased by police in Schertz, Texas

Black Teen Yells for Dad as he is Tasered on Front Porch

An internal investigation has been opened after a teenager was tasered six times, as he yelled for his father.

On Monday around 11:30p.m., Zekee Rayford, a recent high school graduate, was driving home from welding school when he allegedly ran a traffic light, prompting a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over on a dark road, Rayford drove to his family house, according to The Shade Room.

According to The Shade Room:

“Zekee, who had had “the talk’ with his father about police on several occasions, felt like it was safer to drive somewhere where it was light, which was home.”

Rayford exited the vehicle with his hands up, once he pulled into the driveway.

Immediately, police draw their weapons.

“Show me your hands now,” one officer yelled, commanding Rayford to get on the ground.

Rayford runs to the front door pounding and screaming for his father to come help. Three officers followed Rayford, with one officer pointing his taser. Two officers dragged Rayford to the ground while the third officer stands by and watches.

Rayford was tasered six times and continuously kicked while laying on the ground says Rayford’s family, according to The Grio.

Security camera footage shows Kenneth Rayford, his father, and two of his sisters opening the door.

Officers tell his father that his son is under arrest for marijuana found in his vehicle.

“Then why the f— you tase him,” Kenneth asks.

The officer responds, “He fled from us, and he (expletive) ran. Do you understand that?”

“You better relax or you’re going to get it next,” an officer said.

Rayford was charged with felony evading in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and detention, and possession of marijuana, according to Schertz Police Departments Twitter press release.

“Zekee Rayford has been charged with felony evading in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and detention, and possession of marijuana. Following this arrest’s events, an internal investigation has been initiated to ensure all Schertz Police Department policies and procedures were followed.”

Rayford’s family believes that the officers that tackles and tasered Rayford should be fired.

According to The Grio:

““The cops were not in danger,” (Zekee’s sister) DeOndra told Express-News. “He did not run toward them. He had his hands up. They should have taken a step back and tried to de-escalate things.””

Rayford was released on bond and went to the hospital immediately afterwards. He was still covered in bruises and still had taser marks on his back.

Rayford recalling the arrest, shared with his family, that thoughts of George Floyd came to mind while officers were piled on him.

“I thought about George Floyd crying out for his mom,” DeOndra recalled Zekee saying, according to Express-News. “And I was crying for my Dad. I thought I was going to be the next hashtag, the next RIP.”

Officers on scene had body cameras, but it is unclear if they were on.

There has been no disciplinary action against the officers involved in the incident, but Rayford’s family is looking for representation for a civil suit.
