The Proud Boys were able to cause major disruptions at Trump rallies, with the help of law enforcement in 2020, but since the start of the new year, that has not been the case.
As the inauguration date of President-elect Joe Biden gets closer, Trump supporters, right wing protesters, and racists groups have mobilized in the streets, claiming that the election was stolen and demanding a recount.
On January 6, they are attempting to have one final rally, with an estimated attendance of 30,000 people, in a attempt to keep Donald Trump in the White House. Their goal is to pressure Vice President Mike Pence and Republican lawmakers into stopping the inauguration, claiming that the last election was rigged with voter fraud. Those claims are baseless, as Attorney General William Barr announced that, “the U.S. Justice Department has uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of the 2020 election,” according to AP News.
During the recent election year, groups such as the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters, Oath Keepers, and Patriot Prayer have made appearances during protests and rallies. During each event, there is always a counter protest, with law enforcement standing in between. On almost every occasion, law enforcement has shown favoritism towards the Proud Boys. Some officers have been ousted as an affiliate or supporter of the Proud Boys and the like.
On New Year’s Day, a mass civil disobedience rally in Salem was held by Oregon Women for Trump. As usual, the Proud Boys made an appearance, but in a shocking event, Salem police refused to play any games when interacting with the Proud Boys.
News2Share contributor Maranie Staab caught the ‘shock and outrage’ directed towards law enforcement from the Proud Boys. Members threatened violence, cursed, attempted to burn thin blue line imagery, and stepped on a thin blue line flag.
Enrique Tarrio, the Miami-based leader of the Proud Boys was arrested on Monday after arriving to Washington, D.C., according to The New York Times.
Tarrio was arrested on suspicion of burning a Black Lives Matter banner that was torn from a historic Black church located in Washington.
Proud Boy member Tusitala “Tiny” Toese of Vancouver, Washington, was sentenced in October 2020 to six-months in jail for violating his probation agreement by not paying his fines, traveling without permission, and participating in a protest. Toese received timed served.
Protesters for the MAGA protest in Washington D.C. filed for a permit. The permit was granted and amended estimating 30,000 attendees.
Based off the events this year so far involving law enforcement, the days of protection for the Proud Boys may be numbered.
