Body Camera Footage of Tyre Nichols being Assaulted by Memphis Police Department Released

On January 10th, police officers in Memphis killed Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old African American. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability, as well as questions about the use of force by police and the treatment of young people of color in the criminal justice system.

Recently, the Memphis Police Department released four body camera videos of the incident, which provide a disturbing and graphic account of the moments leading up to Nichols’s death. The footage, which was captured by officers body cameras on the scene, shows Nichols being brutally beaten by police. In parts of the videos, there is no sound.

The videos begin with officers attempting to detain Nichols for reckless driving. According to police reports Nichols attempted to flee, before being arrested.

Nichols was rushed to the hospital after reporting issues with breathing. He died three days later.
